Ukraine’s parliament approves mandatory quotas for Ukrainian-language music on radio

According to the regulation 35 per cent of the content must be in Ukrainian

Verkhovna Rada, the Ukrainian parliament, has voted to approve the legislation introducing mandatory Ukrainian-language quotas for the radio stations.

238 MPs out of the 333 present in the session hall supported the bill that would boost prime-time Ukrainian-language radio quotas to 35 percent from the current five percent average airtime.

According to the regulation the quotas will be introduced gradually in two years, starting with 25% this year, 30% next year, and 35% in 2018.

Currently, the only quota that exists on Ukrainian radio is that 50 percent of the weekly content of radio stations has to be produced by a Ukrainian national.

The new law will come into force in four months after it is signed by Ukraine’s President.
