Boryspil International Airport (Kyiv) and other Ukrainian airports in Ukraine should get rid of the information duplication in the Russian language and complete de-communization of infrastructure objects, Infrastructure Minister of Ukraine Volodymyr Omelian has said.

During the operational meeting on Tuesday, he said all the information that the airports of Ukraine have at their disposal, should be used in Ukrainian and English languages on the display board, signs and signposts or otherwise voiced from the loud speakers.

“No Russian language at all. It’s not just a question of the state language usage – it is a question of self-esteem in the first place. The airport staff should use Ukrainian or English languages when communicating with passengers,” the minister said.

Omelian said that in accordance with the decommunization law, all enterprises and institutions “that have a Soviet imprint” should be renamed until the end of November of the current year.

“It is mostly applied to Ukrzaliznytsia, because there are still a number of stations that still have Soviet names. But if the airport has a terminal, a set of cars or at least a coffee shop, with names borrowed from the Soviet era, they should be changed before the first of December. This question is fundamental,” he said.

The minister wants to apply only English and Ukrainian languages to all airlines companies, which perform aviation operations in Ukraine. Omelian separately marked the issue of transliteration of Ukrainian names into English and said that the Infrastructure Ministry will come forth with a relevant initiative to resolve the issue at the Cabinet level.
